Speaker, 15 Lawmakers Quit PDP in Adamawa Assembly Shake-Up

KEY POINTS

  • Speaker Bathiya Wesley and 15 lawmakers resigned from PDP, citing the party’s national crisis.
  • Another lawmaker had quit earlier, and more defections may follow.
  • The group is widely believed to be preparing to join APC, as political alliances shift in Adamawa.

The Speaker of the Adamawa State House of Assembly, Bathiya Wesley, has announced his resignation from the Peoples Democratic Party alongside 15 other lawmakers, marking a major political shift in the state legislature.

Speaking during plenary on Wednesday, Wesley disclosed that he, his deputy speaker Buba Jijiwa, and multiple members had formally submitted resignation letters to the party.

According to the Speaker, all resignation letters cited the same reason — the unresolved internal crisis at the party’s national level.

The Speaker noted that despite their exit, the lawmakers acknowledged the PDP’s role in giving them the platform to contest and win elections, describing their departure as a difficult but necessary decision driven by political realities.

List of Lawmakers Who Resigned

Among those who stepped down from the party are several assembly members, including representatives from different constituencies across the state. One lawmaker, Abubakar Abdullahi, had already resigned a day earlier, signaling the start of the wave of exits.

Although the lawmakers have not officially declared a new political affiliation, reports indicate they may be preparing to join the All Progressives Congress. Political observers see the development as part of a broader realignment ahead of future elections.

Speculation has also grown around the political future of Ahmadu Fintiri, who is reportedly considering a move to the APC. Recently, the governor hosted leaders of the party in Yola for an iftar gathering.

Fintiri said the meeting was meant to promote dialogue, strengthen cooperation, and reinforce commitments to peace, stability, and development in Adamawa State. Analysts, however, interpret the meeting as a possible step toward political realignment.
