Adamu Abubakar, the first son of former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar, has resigned from his role as Adamawa State Commissioner for Works and Energy Development.

His resignation comes just days after Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri announced his defection from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Although Abubakar did not openly state the reason for stepping down, the timing of his exit has drawn attention across the state’s political space.

A Quiet Exit, No Stated Reason

In a resignation letter dated March 2, 2026, and addressed to the governor through the Secretary to the State Government, Abubakar formally informed the administration of his decision to leave office.

He did not explain why he chose to resign. However, his decision followed closely on the heels of Governor Fintiri’s dramatic political shift to the ruling APC.

Last Friday, Fintiri made the announcement during a statewide broadcast, declaring that he and members of his cabinet were leaving the PDP. Within 24 hours, no fewer than 22 commissioners and special advisers also defected to the APC.

In a statement released Monday night by his personal assistant and media aide, Abdulaziz Jauro, Abubakar expressed appreciation to the governor for the opportunity to serve.

He described his appointment as commissioner as a rare privilege and an honour of great significance. According to the statement, he thanked the governor for the confidence placed in him to oversee such a critical ministry.

He also acknowledged the Permanent Secretaries of Works and Energy, directors, engineers, and ministry staff for their professionalism and dedication to infrastructure development across Adamawa State.
