KEY POINTS

  • The Police Council, chaired by President Bola Tinubu, unanimously ratified Tunji Disu’s appointment as Acting Inspector-General of Police.
  • Disu will proceed to the Senate for screening and confirmation as substantive IGP.
  • If confirmed, he will become Nigeria’s 23rd indigenous Inspector-General of Police, bringing over three decades of policing experience to the role.

Nigeria’s top policing body has thrown its weight behind Tunji Disu as the new Acting Inspector-General of Police, setting the stage for what could become a new chapter in the leadership of the Nigeria Police Force.

The decision was reached on Monday at the Presidential Villa in Abuja during a meeting of the Police Council chaired by Bola Tinubu.

The Council Chamber of the Presidential Villa served as the venue for the crucial meeting. The Police Council, which includes all 36 state governors, the Chairman of the Police Service Commission, and the Inspector-General of Police unanimously ratified Disu’s appointment as Acting IGP.

The approval was in line with the provisions of the Police Act, giving his appointment firm legal and institutional backing.

Shortly after the meeting, the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, confirmed the development, describing it as a key step in strengthening leadership within the police force.

Senate Screening is Next

With the Council’s endorsement secured, Disu’s journey is not yet complete. He is expected to appear before the Senate for screening and confirmation before he can officially assume the role as substantive Inspector-General of Police.

If confirmed, he will become the 23rd indigenous Inspector-General of Police in Nigeria’s history.

The meeting was attended by several top government officials, including Vice President Kashim Shettima, Secretary to the Government of the Federation George Akume, National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu, and Head of the Civil Service of the Federation Didi Walson-Jack, alongside governors and ministers.
