Key Points

  • Suspected Boko Haram fighters attack a nomadic settlement in Konduga, killing one herder and injuring another.

  • Gunmen ride into the community on motorcycles and rustle about 1,400 sheep.

  • Security forces launch a joint operation to track the attackers and recover the stolen livestock.

Suspected Boko Haram and Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) fighters attacked a nomadic settlement in Wuturo community of Konduga Local Government Area in Borno State, killing one herder and rustling about 1,400 sheep.

Police said the attackers stormed the settlement late Tuesday night, opening fire on residents before fleeing with the livestock.

Police confirm death, injury

The spokesperson for the Borno State Police Command, ASP Nahum Daso, confirmed the incident in a statement on Thursday. He said one person was killed while another sustained injuries during the attack.

According to Daso, the assault occurred on March 10 at about 10:30 p.m. when gunmen riding five motorcycles invaded the settlement.

Preliminary investigations showed that a 40-year-old herder, Ahmadu Baida, suffered fatal gunshot wounds during the attack.

Another victim, Mohammadu Baida, 30, sustained a gunshot wound on his left leg.

The injured victim was taken to a hospital for treatment while Ahmadu Baida was confirmed dead on arrival by a medical doctor, the police said.

Attackers rustle large number of livestock

The attackers also made away with about 1,400 sheep belonging to herders in the settlement.

Police said the incident was first reported to the Konduga Police Division by the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association in the area.

Following the report, security agencies moved quickly to the community.

Security forces launch manhunt

Daso said a joint team of police officers, soldiers, members of the Civilian Joint Task Force and local hunters mobilized to the scene under the leadership of the Divisional Police Officer in Konduga.

Authorities said they have activated coordinated operational strategies to track down the attackers and recover the rustled livestock.

“Tactical and intelligence assets have also been strategically deployed across the affected area and adjoining communities to strengthen security presence,” Daso said.

The police spokesperson added that the command is working with other security agencies and community stakeholders to prevent further attacks.

Fresh concerns over renewed attacks

The latest incident comes days after suspected terrorists launched an attack on a military base in Kukawa Local Government Area of Borno State.

Troops reportedly engaged the attackers in a gun battle that lasted for several hours, leaving some soldiers dead, including a commanding officer.

Despite sustained military operations in the Northeast, sporadic attacks on communities and military formations continue to challenge efforts to restore lasting peace in the region.

The Borno State Police Command expressed condolences to the family of the deceased and assured residents of its commitment to protecting lives and property.

Authorities also urged members of the public to remain vigilant and report suspicious movements to security agencies.
