A newly identified terrorist group known as Mamudawa has reportedly launched coordinated attacks on several communities in Kebbi State, killing at least four people and forcing many residents to flee their homes.
The assaults occurred on Sunday and Monday in communities within the Gebbe District of Shanga Local Government Area, leaving widespread destruction in their wake.
Residents said the attackers stormed the affected settlements and set multiple buildings ablaze.
The affected communities include Kalkami, Tungar Bori, and Kawara, where houses were torched and properties destroyed.
Kawara village completely razed
Kawara village was said to have been completely razed on Monday, prompting residents to escape to nearby Gungu town and surrounding forests for safety.
Security sources indicated that the attackers are believed to have moved from the Wawa Forest located in Borgu Local Government Area of neighbouring Niger State. The terrain of the wetlands in the area reportedly made it easier for the assailants to launch the attacks and withdraw without immediate resistance.
The Kebbi State Police Command confirmed the incidents, noting that the Mamudawa group exploited the difficult terrain to carry out the assaults on the communities.
The latest violence comes shortly after attacks by Lakurawa terrorists in the same region, which left 12 soldiers and a mobile police officer dead, heightening fears of escalating insecurity in the area.
Meanwhile, in a separate development, suspected bandits abducted six persons in Isa Local Government Area of Sokoto State. The attackers reportedly threatened to continue daily assaults unless residents seek amnesty arrangements.
