A faction of Boko Haram aligned with the Islamic State has launched a deadly attack on a military formation in Borno State, killing Brigadier-General O. Braimah and several other soldiers.
The assault reportedly took place on Wednesday night when heavily armed insurgents stormed a Joint Task Force base in Benesheikh, located in Kaga Local Government Area. The attackers were said to have used explosives and sustained gunfire to breach the facility, triggering an intense battle that lasted for several hours.
Security sources said the insurgents opened fire sporadically while attempting to overrun the base. During the attack, multiple soldiers were killed, several others sustained injuries, and some personnel were declared missing in the aftermath of the confrontation.
The incident is the latest in a string of violent attacks targeting security formations in Borno State.
Ongoing Military Engagements
In recent weeks, troops of the Nigerian Army, supported by the Air Force and members of the Civilian Joint Task Force, have been engaged in repeated clashes with insurgent groups across parts of the state. The renewed offensives by the terrorists have focused on forward operating bases and security facilities.
Military insiders say the attacks appear coordinated, aimed at weakening troop morale and disrupting operations in the North-East.
In March, insurgents carried out simultaneous assaults on military bases in Baga, Buratai, and Ajilari near Maiduguri, highlighting their capacity to strike across multiple locations within a short period.
Authorities in Borno State have continued efforts to tackle the deteriorating security situation, but the region remains volatile as insurgents intensify their activities.
Security analysts say the latest attack underscores the urgent need for strengthened protection for both military personnel and civilians in the conflict-affected areas.
