Former Ondo State Deputy Governor, Agboola Ajayi, has formally declared his intention to contest the Ondo South Senatorial seat in the 2027 general elections, positioning himself as the most experienced candidate for the role.
Addressing political stakeholders and journalists in Akure, Ajayi highlighted his extensive political journey, which spans grassroots to national levels. His résumé includes roles as councillor, supervisor for works, local government chairman, member of the House of Representatives, and deputy governor.
According to him, this breadth of experience gives him a unique understanding of governance and public service. He stressed that the Senate requires individuals with deep institutional knowledge rather than newcomers still learning the ropes.
Zoning, Fairness, and the Case for His Constituency
Ajayi framed his ambition within the context of zoning and equity, arguing that his local government deserves a turn at the Senate.
He noted that among the six local government areas in Ondo South, his constituency remains the only one yet to produce a senator since Nigeria’s return to democracy in 1999. He described this as a significant imbalance that should be corrected in the interest of fairness and inclusiveness.
“By every political calculation, it is our turn,” he asserted, appealing to stakeholders to support what he described as a just cause.
Speaking on his relationship with the current senator, Jimoh Ibrahim, Ajayi dismissed speculations of rivalry, revealing that both men maintain a cordial relationship.
He disclosed that he had personally met Ibrahim, who reportedly acknowledged his qualifications for the position. Ajayi emphasized that political competition should not be mistaken for personal enmity.
He also ruled out participation in any potential by-election, making it clear that his focus remains firmly on the 2027 general elections.
