KEY POINTS

  • Troops of the Nigerian Army foiled an attempted attack by angry youths on an NSCDC outpost in Vom, Plateau State.
  • The unrest was sparked by the detention of a suspect, with protesters threatening jungle justice and arson.
  • Prompt intervention by security forces led to the safe evacuation of the suspect.

An attempted breakdown of law and order was narrowly avoided in Plateau State after angry youths mobilised to attack a Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, NSCDC, outpost in Vom, located in Jos South Local Government Area.

The unrest was reportedly triggered by the detention of a suspect, which sparked outrage among members of the community.

According to security sources, the aggrieved youths had gathered in large numbers, expressing their dissatisfaction and threatening to take matters into their own hands. The situation quickly escalated, with indications that the protesters were prepared to carry out jungle justice on the suspect and destroy the security facility.

Troops Respond Swiftly to Intelligence

The incident occurred within the operational jurisdiction of Sector 6 of Operation Enduring Peace. Acting on credible intelligence, troops of the Nigerian Army were deployed to the scene at about 11:00 a.m. on April 21.

The soldiers, working in coordination with other security agencies, moved quickly to confront the growing crowd. Their timely intervention proved crucial in de-escalating tensions, as they successfully dispersed the agitated youths before any damage could be done.

To further prevent a breakdown of law and order, security operatives ensured the safe evacuation of the detained suspect from the outpost to the NSCDC headquarters. This strategic move helped to calm the situation and remove the immediate trigger of the unrest.

Security forces maintained a strong presence in the area to deter any resurgence of violence, while also safeguarding the facility from potential attacks.

The swift and coordinated response by the military and other security agencies ensured that the situation did not spiral into violence. No casualties were recorded, and the NSCDC outpost remained unharmed.

The incident underscores the persistent challenge of mob justice in some communities, while also highlighting the importance of rapid security intervention in maintaining peace and order.
