KEY POINTS

  • Gunmen killed a traditional ruler, his wife, son, and two others in a palace attack in Benue.
  • Attackers disguised themselves and spoke the local language to avoid suspicion before striking.
  • Five people died, one was injured, and security agencies have begun investigations.

Gunmen have killed five people, including a traditional ruler, his wife, and their son, in a deadly attack on Olegabulu community in Agatu Local Government Area of Benue State.

Residents said the gunmen, who arrived on two motorcycles on Thursday night, blended into the community by speaking the local dialect and interacting freely before heading straight to the monarch’s residence, where they opened fire.

More Victims Killed Nearby

After attacking the palace, the gunmen reportedly moved to a nearby compound, killing two additional residents and injuring one person before fleeing the scene.

The Chairman of Agatu LGA, Melvin Ejeh, confirmed the killings, noting that five people died while one person sustained injuries. Security personnel, including the police, have since visited the area, although the state police spokesperson said full details were still being gathered.

This attack adds to the growing wave of insecurity in Benue State, particularly in Agatu and surrounding areas, which have experienced repeated violent incidents in recent years.

Agatu LGA has historically been a hotspot for clashes involving armed groups, often linked to disputes over land, farming, and grazing routes. Several communities in the area have faced displacement and loss of lives due to recurring violence.
