  • Lagos government denied reports that Governor Sanwo-Olu was asked to resign over health issues.
  • Officials confirmed he is healthy and actively performing his duties.
  • Authorities say the rumour likely came from a misinterpretation of a routine political meeting with his deputy.

The Lagos State Government has firmly denied widespread reports suggesting that Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has been asked to resign due to health concerns, describing the claims as false and misleading.

In an official statement, the governor’s Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Gboyega Akosile, dismissed the report, originally attributed to Sahara Reporters, as fabricated and lacking any factual basis.

Akosile stressed that the governor is in excellent health and remains fully committed to his responsibilities. According to him, there has been no pressure from any quarters for Sanwo-Olu to step down, contrary to what was widely circulated online.

He explained that the rumours may have stemmed from a recent meeting between the governor and his deputy, Obafemi Hamzat. During that meeting, Hamzat reportedly informed the governor of his intention to contest the 2027 governorship election.

The government clarified that the meeting was routine and part of ongoing political consultations within the ruling party, not an indication of any leadership crisis or health-related concern.

Akosile Criticises the report

Akosile also criticised the publication of the report, accusing it of promoting sensationalism and misinformation. He noted that while the government typically ignores such claims, the growing spread of the story made it necessary to issue a clear response to reassure the public.

He urged Lagos residents to disregard the false report and avoid sharing unverified information, warning that such misinformation could undermine public trust in the state’s leadership.

The statement concluded by reaffirming the administration’s commitment to transparency and continued service, assuring citizens that governance in Lagos remains stable and uninterrupted.
