KEY POINTS

  • President Tinubu endorsed Obafemi Hamzat as APC’s Lagos governorship candidate for 2027.
  • The GAC and Governor Sanwo-Olu had earlier backed Hamzat as consensus candidate.
  • The move strengthens Hamzat’s position despite opposition from other aspirants.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has officially endorsed Obafemi Hamzat as the governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Lagos State for the 2027 elections.

The endorsement followed a high-level meeting at the Presidential Villa in Abuja with members of the party’s Governance Advisory Council (GAC).

According to Hamzat, the GAC delegation, led by its chairman, Prince Tajudeen Olusi—formally presented him to the president, who subsequently approved the council’s choice.

The GAC had earlier adopted Hamzat as its consensus candidate after internal consultations, reinforcing a unified position within the Lagos APC leadership.

Sanwo-Olu Backs Successor Bid

The endorsement aligns with the position of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, who had earlier declared Hamzat as his preferred successor.

The 34-member GAC also demonstrated strong support by resolving to purchase Hamzat’s ₦50 million nomination form.

Reacting to the endorsement, Hamzat acknowledged the weight of the responsibility but expressed confidence in his experience as deputy governor.

He emphasised his familiarity with governance processes, stating that his time in office has equipped him with the knowledge needed to lead Lagos effectively.

GAC Chairman Tajudeen Olusi dismissed objections raised by other aspirants, including APC chieftain Samuel Ajose, who had criticised the consensus arrangement.

Olusi maintained that the decision followed due consultation and reflected the collective will of party leaders, stressing that individual opinions do not override agreed positions.
