The Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company, IBEDC, has confirmed that two of its staff members were abducted by gunmen in Ogun State.

According to the IBEDC, the incident occurred on April 29, 2026, while the IBEDC workers were carrying out official duties in the Ogunmakin area along the Ibadan–Ijebu Ode Road.

The IBEDC said the workers were forcefully taken away by unidentified gunmen, raising fresh concerns about the safety of field staff operating in high-risk areas.

IBEDC management described the situation as deeply troubling, noting that its thoughts are with the abducted workers and their families during the difficult period.

The IBEDC said it is maintaining close communication with the victims’ families, providing necessary support as efforts to secure their release continue.

It also appealed for understanding from the public, stressing that the situation remains sensitive and requires careful handling.

Security agencies engaged for rescue operation

The company disclosed that it is working closely with security agencies to ensure the safe rescue of the abducted staff.

While details of the operation were not made public, IBEDC said coordinated efforts are ongoing to bring the victims back safely.

Management added that it would provide updates when appropriate, depending on the progress of rescue efforts.

The incident highlights growing security challenges faced by utility workers, especially those operating in remote or less-secured areas.

Electricity distribution staff often work in isolated locations while maintaining infrastructure, making them vulnerable to attacks and kidnappings.

The abduction adds to a growing list of similar incidents across Nigeria, raising concerns about the protection of workers delivering essential services.
