The Lagos State Government has announced the immediate closure of the outbound section of Eko Bridge leading to Lagos Island for urgent structural assessment and rehabilitation works.
According to the government, the closure will take effect from Tuesday, May 12, 2026, and will remain in place until further notice.
The Lagos State Commissioner for Transportation, Oluwaseun Osiyemi, advised motorists travelling through Apongbon and Ijora Olopa to make use of the Third Mainland Bridge as an alternative route during the repair period.
He explained that the inbound lane heading towards Lagos Island would remain open to traffic.
Traffic Officials, Security Operatives to Manage Movement
Osiyemi also assured residents and commuters that traffic management officials and security personnel would be stationed at diversion points and along alternative routes to maintain order and ensure smooth vehicular movement throughout the rehabilitation exercise.
Eko Bridge is one of the major transport links connecting the Lagos mainland to Lagos Island and serves thousands of commercial buses, private vehicles, and heavy-duty trucks daily.
The bridge plays a crucial role in easing movement within Nigeria’s commercial capital, making any restriction on the route likely to have significant effects on traffic and commuting time across the state.
