KEY POINTS

  • A senior LUTH official accused the hospital management of corruption, procurement violations, and abuse of office.
  • The petition alleged irregular contractor payments, questionable travel claims, and unfair disciplinary procedures.
  • LUTH Chief Medical Director Prof. Wasiu Adeyemo denied all allegations and described the petition as baseless.

A senior official at Lagos University Teaching Hospital, LUTH, Dr. Saheed Ogundare, has accused the hospital’s management of corruption, abuse of office, procurement violations, and administrative irregularities in a formal petition demanding an independent investigation.

The petition, dated April 13, 2026, was addressed to the Chief Medical Director of LUTH Prof. Wasiu Adeyemo. It alleged questionable financial approvals, irregular payments to contractors, violations of public service rules, and breaches of anti-corruption laws.

Ogundare claimed the issues in LUTH came to light after management began questioning his PhD programme at Obafemi Awolowo University.

He said although he applied for study leave with pay in 2023 in line with public service regulations, the request was denied without proper explanation.

According to him, he still completed the programme using personal funds and graduated in December 2025.

He also alleged that management of LUTH only began scrutinising his academic records after he resumed duty in March 2026, describing the move as selective administrative action.

Claims of Irregular Contractor Payments

The petition further accused LUTH management of authorising full payments for projects that were either incomplete or poorly executed.

Ogundare specifically mentioned the Directly Observed Therapy Centre and a geriatric facility project. He alleged that contractors handling the projects received full payments before completion, contrary to the provisions of the Public Procurement Act.

According to him, the Directly Observed Therapy Centre was hurriedly completed after concerns were previously raised over how funds were disbursed.

He also alleged that the facility later suffered two fire incidents, raising questions about construction quality and supervision.

He further claimed that the contractor handling the geriatric facility abandoned the project after allegedly receiving full payment.

The petition also raised concerns about Duty Tour Allowance payments and travel expense claims.

Ogundare alleged that records showed public funds were paid for an official assignment that may not have been attended, with no evidence of refund. He also claimed that about N1.7 million was allegedly collected for a four-day official trip involving air travel, whereas available information suggested the journey was made by road and lasted only one day.
