  • Several students were hospitalised after a suspected gas leak at Anglican Girls Grammar School in Ijebu Ode.
  • Ogun authorities detected elevated methane levels and launched an emergency investigation into the source.
  • The incident occurred weeks after a similar suspected gas leak affected another school in the same town.

Panic broke out in Ijebu Ode on Friday after a suspected gas leak at Anglican Girls Grammar School triggered an air pollution incident that left several students hospitalised.

Many of the students reportedly fainted on the school premises and were rushed to the General Hospital in Ijebu Ode for urgent medical treatment.

Emotional scenes unfolded at the hospital as worried parents gathered to identify and attend to their children after ambulances arrived with victims.

Videos circulating online showed distressed parents crying and calling out for their children amid the confusion.

Incident Raises Fresh Concerns Over Repeated Gas Leaks

The latest development has heightened fears among residents, coming barely one month after a similar suspected gas leak affected students of Our Lady Apostles Secondary School in the same town. In that incident, at least 30 students were hospitalised after reportedly inhaling harmful substances believed to have come from a nearby source.

The repeated nature of the incidents has raised concerns about environmental safety and possible underground gas emissions within the area.

The Ogun State Commissioner for Environment, Ola Oresanya, disclosed that air quality monitoring devices deployed at the school detected elevated methane concentrations.

According to him, methane readings in surrounding areas peaked at about 13,500 parts per million. Although the concentration was below the explosive threshold, he described it as environmentally significant and deserving of immediate attention.
