KEY POINTS

  • CAIDOV condemned the killing of a teacher and abduction of students and staff during a school attack in Oyo State.
  • The organisation blamed repeated school attacks on failures in intelligence gathering and security response systems.
  • The group demanded urgent rescue operations, prosecution of perpetrators and full implementation of the Safe Schools Initiative.

The Centre Against Injustice and Domestic Violence, CAIDOV, has strongly condemned the abduction of students and teachers in Oyo State, as well as the gruesome killing of a teacher during the attack, describing the incident as a tragic reflection of the worsening insecurity facing schools across Nigeria.

In a statement released on Sunday, the organisation described the beheading of the teacher by suspected terrorists as “a crime against humanity” and called for immediate government intervention to prevent further attacks on educational institutions.

CAIDOV expressed deep sympathy to the family of the slain teacher, as well as colleagues and students affected by the incident, stressing that such violence must never become normal in society.

“The beheading of the teacher is a crime against humanity. Such savagery cannot and must not be normalised. We extend our deepest condolences to the family, colleagues, and students of the deceased,” the group stated.

Group Warns Of Growing Threat To Education

The organisation said the kidnapping of students and teachers highlights the growing dangers confronting Nigeria’s education sector and threatens the safety of learning environments across the country.

According to CAIDOV, the government has a constitutional responsibility to protect lives and property, especially within schools where children and educators should feel secure.

“The abduction of students and teachers is a national disgrace. Education is a right, not a bargaining chip. The government has a constitutional duty under Section 14(2)(b) of the 1999 Constitution to protect lives and property,” the statement added.

The group warned that continued attacks on schools could discourage parents from sending their children to school and further worsen the country’s educational challenges.

CAIDOV blamed the recurring attacks on schools on what it described as lapses in intelligence gathering, poor preventive security measures and weak emergency response systems.

The organisation argued that the repeated nature of such incidents shows that authorities have not done enough to secure vulnerable communities and schools from criminal groups.

“Inaction is complicity. The repeated pattern of attacks on schools shows a failure of intelligence gathering, rapid response, and preventive security measures,” the statement noted.
