The Minority Leader of the House of Representatives, Kingsley Chinda, has stepped down from his position, ending his tenure as the leader of the opposition caucus in the Green Chamber.

The resignation was formally announced during plenary on Tuesday when Speaker of the House, Tajudeen Abbas, read Chinda’s resignation letter before lawmakers.

The development marks a significant shift in the leadership structure of the opposition bloc in the House and comes amid ongoing political realignments in Rivers State.

In his resignation letter dated April 23, 2026, Chinda informed the House that he was relinquishing his role as Minority Leader with immediate effect.

The Rivers State lawmaker described his time in office as an honour and a privilege, noting that he had served the interests of the minority caucus while contributing to the legislative activities of the House.

According to him, the opportunity to lead the opposition lawmakers allowed him to participate actively in efforts aimed at strengthening democratic governance and promoting national development.

Lawmaker Appreciates Speaker, Colleagues

Chinda expressed gratitude to Speaker Tajudeen Abbas and members of the House for their support and cooperation throughout his tenure.

He acknowledged the collaborative relationship he enjoyed with fellow lawmakers and thanked them for the confidence reposed in him while serving in the leadership position.

The lawmaker noted that his experience as Minority Leader had been both rewarding and impactful, enabling him to contribute meaningfully to parliamentary debates and legislative oversight functions.

Despite stepping down from the leadership position, Chinda assured members that he remains committed to his responsibilities as a representative of his constituency.

He stated that his resignation from the minority leadership does not affect his role as a member of the House of Representatives and pledged to continue supporting legislative activities.

According to him, he will remain actively involved in advancing the work of the National Assembly and promoting policies that serve the interests of Nigerians.
