LASU Student Dies After Armed Robbery Attack in Lagos

The Lagos State University, LASU, community has been thrown into mourning following the death of one of its students, Boluwatife Joseph Otabor, who succumbed to injuries sustained during an armed robbery attack in Lagos.

Otabor, a student of the Department of History and International Studies in the Faculty of Arts, died on Tuesday, June 2, 2026, after spending several days undergoing medical treatment.

The university described the incident as a painful tragedy and expressed deep sadness over the loss of a promising student whose life was cut short by violence.

According to information released by the university, the incident occurred on the night of May 29, 2026, in the Iba area of Lagos State.

Otabor and some of his friends were reportedly attacked by armed robbers while off-campus. During the attack, he sustained serious injuries that required urgent medical attention.

He was subsequently admitted to a hospital, where doctors battled to save his life. Despite medical efforts, he eventually died from the injuries he suffered during the attack.

University Reacted Immediately to Incident

The institution disclosed that support measures were immediately activated through the Office of the Acting Dean of Students’ Affairs, led by Dr. Abiodun Fatai-Abatan. University authorities also kept the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello, informed about developments concerning the student’s condition.

The university further stated that it maintained regular communication with the medical team handling Otabor’s treatment and closely monitored his health status throughout his hospitalisation.

Reacting to the student’s death, the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello, expressed heartfelt condolences on behalf of the university’s management, staff, students, and the wider LASU community.

She sympathised with the deceased’s family, friends, classmates, and colleagues, describing the loss as devastating.

The university noted that the death has left many students and staff members grieving, particularly those who knew Otabor personally and admired his academic pursuits.

Following confirmation of the student’s death, representatives of the university visited members of his family to offer support and condolences.

The institution also engaged officials of the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH) and relevant law enforcement agencies as part of efforts to understand the circumstances surrounding the incident.

LASU assured the public that it is collaborating with security agencies to ensure a comprehensive investigation into the robbery attack.
