KEY POINTS
• Former senator Iyabo Obasanjo is reportedly set to rejoin the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) shortly after leaving the APC.
• Her move follows dissatisfaction over the APC governorship primaries in Ogun State, where she lost out on the party’s ticket.
• PDP insiders are planning a joint political rally in Abeokuta involving her and Oladipupo Adebutu ahead of the 2027 elections.
Iyabo Obasanjo, former senator representing Ogun Central and daughter of ex-President Olusegun Obasanjo, is reportedly set to return to the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, just days after resigning from the All Progressives Congress (APC).
According to multiple sources familiar with the development, she has already communicated her decision to key associates within the opposition party and is preparing for a formal political realignment in Ogun State.
Political insiders say her return marks a renewed focus on consolidating her influence within the PDP ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Sources within the PDP revealed that plans are underway for a major political rally scheduled for June 16 in Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital.
The rally is expected to take place at the PDP state secretariat and may feature Iyabo Obasanjo alongside Oladipupo Adebutu, a former federal lawmaker and key PDP figure in the state.
Party insiders described the planned event as a joint mobilisation effort aimed at strengthening the PDP’s presence in Ogun State, particularly in preparation for upcoming senate and governorship campaigns.
Political Background and Previous Tenure
Iyabo Obasanjo previously served as a senator representing Ogun Central after being elected in 2007 on the PDP platform.
During her tenure, she chaired the Senate Committee on Health, where she was involved in legislative oversight of national health policies and reforms.
However, she lost her re-election bid in 2011, marking a temporary setback in her legislative career.
The former senator recently resigned from the APC, only two months after joining the party and declaring interest in the Ogun State governorship race.
Her ambition was reportedly affected after the APC adopted Senator Solomon Adeola, who represents Ogun West, as its consensus candidate for the 2027 governorship election.
Following this decision, Iyabo suspended her governorship ambition and later exited the party.
In her resignation letter, she accused the APC leadership of unfair treatment and alleged that internal agreements were breached.
She also claimed that some of her supporters were denied access to venues where key party decisions were being finalised.
Her planned return to the PDP is seen as part of a broader political realignment in Ogun State ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Observers say her move could reshape internal dynamics within the PDP, particularly given her family’s political influence and longstanding presence in national politics.
Party sources say consultations are ongoing to integrate her fully into PDP structures as preparations intensify for upcoming electoral contests.
