Tension has risen between neighbouring communities in Enugu and Ebonyi states following a deadly attack allegedly carried out by suspected militants from Ishiagu in Ebonyi State on residents of Obiagu Mpu community in Aninri Local Government Area of Enugu State.
The incident, which reportedly occurred on Saturday, has heightened fears of a wider communal conflict over a protracted boundary and land ownership dispute between the two agrarian communities.
According to local sources, one person was killed while three others sustained severe injuries during the attack.
Victims Attacked While Working on Farms
Eyewitnesses said the assailants stormed farmlands in Obiagu Mpu while residents were engaged in cultivation activities and opened fire on them.
A community source identified the deceased as Orji Ibe, who was allegedly shot dead during the attack.
Three other residents—Anyanta Anyaene, Ndubisi Ajah, and Ani Benjamin—were reportedly beaten and seriously injured. Sources said Ajah was left in a coma, while the victims are currently receiving treatment in hospital.
Residents described the attack as a major escalation of the lingering boundary dispute and warned that emotions were running high among youths in the area.
The incident has thrown the border communities into panic, with many residents reportedly moving their belongings amid fears of retaliatory attacks.
Community leaders have appealed for restraint, warning that any reprisal could further worsen the crisis.
