World Cup 2026: Nigerian-American Balogun earns back-to-back Man of the Match awards

KEY POINTS

  • Balogun won a second straight Man of the Match award in the 2026 World Cup.
  • His pressing forced an own goal as the USA beat Australia 2-0 to win Group D.
  • Born in New York to Nigerian parents, he chose the USA over England and Nigeria.

Folarin Balogun’s impressive start to the 2026 FIFA World Cup continued on Friday, as the striker picked up his second straight Man of the Match award after helping the United States reach the knockout stage. The Nigerian-American forward shone in the Americans’ 2-0 win over Australia, a result that secured qualification for the Round of 32 and confirmed the co-hosts as Group D winners.

A decisive display against Australia

Although Balogun did not score, he played a central role in the opening goal, because his high pressing rattled the Australian defence. Under pressure from the striker, defender Cameron Burgess turned the ball into his own net in the 11th minute to hand the United States an early lead.

Moreover, Balogun stayed a constant threat throughout the match, using his pace, movement and link-up play to keep Australia on the back foot. His performance carried even more weight with captain Christian Pulisic unavailable, as the Arsenal academy graduate led the attack with maturity and energy. Consequently, the award marked the second consecutive game in which he stood out as the team’s best performer.

From New York to the world stage

Balogun first announced himself in the Americans’ opening fixture against Paraguay, where he scored twice in a commanding 4-1 victory. Notably, that brace made him the first United States player to net two goals in a World Cup match since 1930, and it earned him his first Man of the Match accolade.

Born in New York to Nigerian parents and raised in England, Balogun qualified to represent three countries at senior level. After he featured for England at youth level, he committed his international future to the United States, turning down the chance to play for either England or Nigeria.

Ultimately, the 25-year-old’s form has become one of the main reasons behind the United States’ strong start, as the co-hosts emerged among the first teams to seal a place in the knockout rounds. Therefore, his rise gives the host nation a sharp focal point in attack heading into the last 32, while his Nigerian roots keep many fans at home watching his progress with pride. By stringing together two standout displays, Balogun has quickly turned into one of the early faces of the tournament.
