At least 16 people have been rescued after a residential building collapse in the Dan Dishe area of Kwanar Yashi, Fagge Local Government Area of Kano State.

The incident occurred in the early hours of Saturday, August 8, 2026, leaving several other occupants feared trapped beneath the debris as emergency responders raced to the scene.

The Kano State Fire Service confirmed the incident, saying it received a distress call at approximately 4:32 a.m. and immediately mobilised rescue personnel from its headquarters to the affected area.

According to Fire Service spokesperson Saminu Abdullahi, rescue teams arrived to find a residential structure measuring about 20 by 30 feet completely collapsed.

Responders began searching through the rubble and successfully recovered 16 people from the debris.

Among those rescued were three children who were found unconscious during the operation. They were identified as five-year-old Affan Yusuf, seven-year-old Hassana Yusuf and nine-month-old Ummulkursum Yusuf.

The recovery of the victims provided some relief to residents and emergency workers, although concerns remained over the possibility that more people could still be trapped beneath the collapsed structure.

Rescue operation continues

The Fire Service said its rescue operation had not been called off, with emergency personnel continuing to comb through the rubble in search of additional victims.

Abdullahi confirmed that more people were feared to be trapped and stressed that rescue workers were still working to determine the full extent of the incident.

The ongoing operation is expected to continue until responders are satisfied that no one remains trapped beneath the debris.

The immediate cause of the building collapse has not been determined.

The Kano State Fire Service said an investigation had commenced to establish the circumstances that led to the structural failure.

Authorities are expected to examine the condition of the building, its construction history and other factors that could have contributed to the collapse.

The Fire Service also urged residents to take appropriate safety precautions, particularly during the rainy season, when weakened structures and unstable buildings may face additional risks.
