Pa Reuben Famuyide Fasoranti, the national leader of the pan-Yoruba socio-political organisation Afenifere, has died at the age of 100.

The elder statesman, who celebrated his 100th birthday on May 11, 2026, was a prominent figure in Nigerian politics and a leading advocate for Yoruba interests, good governance and social justice.

A Lifetime of Politics, Education and Service

Born on May 11, 1926, in Uso, Ondo State, Fasoranti built a political career shaped by the progressive ideals of Chief Obafemi Awolowo. He was associated with the Action Group and later the Unity Party of Nigeria, becoming an influential voice in Yoruba political affairs.

During Nigeria’s Second Republic, he served as Commissioner for Finance in the old Ondo State from 1979 to 1983. He later became Afenifere’s leader after the death of Chief Abraham Adesanya.

Fasoranti was also among the leaders of the National Democratic Coalition (NADECO), which opposed military rule during the regime of the late General Sani Abacha. The report said he was among those the regime attempted to assassinate in 1996.

Beyond politics, Fasoranti had a background in education. He attended Ondo Boys’ High School, Yaba Higher College in Lagos and the University College, Ibadan, where he studied English and Geography. He worked as a teacher and later served as principal of Oyemekun Grammar School and Iju-Itaogbolu Grammar School. After retiring, he established Omolere Nursery and Primary School and Akure High School.

Throughout his life, Fasoranti remained an advocate for Yoruba unity and the advancement of his people. His legacy was also shaped by personal tragedy, including the killing of his daughter in an attack along the Benin-Ore road.

Ondo State Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa described the late elder statesman as a symbol of wisdom, integrity and selfless service. He extended condolences to the Fasoranti family, the people of Akure Kingdom and residents of Ondo State, praising Fasoranti’s contributions to the state and Nigeria.

Fasoranti is survived by his children and grandchildren. His death marks the passing of a prominent figure whose political career spanned several eras of Nigeria’s history.
