Key Points

  • SDP is witnessing growing defections from APC and other parties ahead of 2027.
  • Adewole Adebayo emphasizes fairness, transparency, and inclusiveness in the party’s operations.
  • The SDP aims to provide a credible alternative for governance in Nigeria.

Adewole Adebayo, former presidential candidate of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) in the 2023 elections, has shed light on the ongoing defections from the All Progressives Congress (APC) to the SDP.

Adebayo suggested that these defections signal the emergence of the SDP as a major political force ahead of the 2027 elections.

In an interview, Adebayo confirmed the defection of former Kaduna State governor Nasir El-Rufai to the SDP, while also revealing that several other political leaders have joined the party, with some choosing to keep their affiliations discreet for now.

“El-Rufai is not a big fish but a fellow fisherman joining our expedition,” Adebayo said. “Many others are joining, but announcements will be made at their discretion.”

Growing political realignment and SDP’s rising influence

Adebayo emphasized that the SDP is becoming an appealing platform for Nigerians seeking a credible political alternative.

“Nigeria’s ship has sunk, and we need to rescue it,” he said.

According to Adebayo, the party’s emphasis on patriotism, fairness, and inclusiveness is attracting members from across the political spectrum.

Addressing the motivations behind these defections, Adebayo said the SDP’s commitment to transparency and merit-based processes is a key driver.

He asserted that the party welcomes individuals who prioritize national development over personal ambition.

“We assure them of fairness and adherence to due process. Everyone will be treated equally, and the party is not ruled by any single individual,” he added.

Adebayo also dismissed concerns about internal conflicts arising from new members with presidential ambitions, including El-Rufai.

“If El-Rufai chooses to contest, it will be through a fair and transparent process. The SDP will not be used by desperate individuals for political gain,” he said.

He highlighted that the party’s focus remains on resolving Nigeria’s challenges and delivering good governance.

SDP’s vision for national transformation

Commenting on Nigeria’s current political climate, Adebayo said the SDP is committed to reshaping governance by adhering to constitutional principles and promoting inclusivity.

He criticized the current administration’s performance, citing economic hardships, insecurity, and lack of diversity in government appointments as key issues.

“This government has underperformed, with budget execution below 30 percent. It lacks inclusivity, creativity, and solutions to pressing national problems,” he said.

Adebayo emphasized that the SDP’s approach is grounded in transparency and public engagement. “We stick to the constitution, avoid shortcuts, and let the people decide. That is our pathway to success.”

Responding to speculations about the presidency in 2027, Adebayo dismissed regional power debates, stating that the focus should be on competence and patriotism.

“The presidency is neither North nor South. It should be about serving the people. Nigerians are hungry and insecure regardless of region,” he said.

Adebayo urged patriotic Nigerians to join the SDP and contribute to the nation’s progress. “If there are patriots and competent people left, now is the time to show up and work for Nigeria’s future.”
