In a decisive move, the Enugu State Government is joining forces with key civil society organizations (CSOs) to eradicate gender-based violence (GBV). This collaboration involves noteworthy groups like the African Law Foundation (AFRILAW) and the New-Life Community Care Initiative (NELCCI).
During a pivotal advocacy visit, these CSOs met with Ngozi Enih, the state’s Commissioner for Children, Gender Affairs, and Social Development.
According to a report by the Daily Post, the visit marked their engagement in the 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence. This significant campaign is a United Nations initiative.
“Partaking in this global movement is a first for Enugu State. We are eager to collaborate with governmental bodies to enhance the campaign’s reach,” stated Chinwuike Okereke, Executive Director of AFRILAW. Furthermore, the groups are launching initiatives that include active social media involvement and open public discussions.
The focus is clear: ‘Unite, invest to prevent violence against women and girls.’ Consequently, they are advocating for increased governmental backing. They believe local authorities hold a crucial role in funding and supporting prevention and educational measures.
Moreover, the coalition is organizing a men’s conference. The goal is to directly engage males in dialogue about the prevalent issue of GBV. “Addressing the roots of toxic masculinity is essential. We need to encourage healthy behaviors among men and boys,” explained Kobi Ikpo from the Agents for Citizens-Driven Transformation (ACT).
Commissioner Enih responded positively to the presented initiatives. She emphasized that this advocacy aligns with Governor Peter Mbah’s broader vision for peace within Enugu State. The idea of a men’s conference, aimed particularly at young males, was a highlight. It presents a chance to effect change, especially for those growing up in abusive settings.
Supporting this, Florence Ifeanyi Aneke of NELCCI praised the meeting’s collaborative nature. She also issued a community-wide call to action. The collective effort of CSOs, the government, and the public is vital. Together, they can form a resilient front to safeguard the future of women and girls in Enugu State.
