  • A stray bullet from a VIP convoy killed pedestrian Timothy John in Abuja after security personnel fired shots to disperse traffic caused by a fatal truck-tricycle collision.
  • Police have yet to identify the convoy, sparking public outcry over reckless use of firearms by VIP escorts.
  • The incident has eclipsed the original crash, which left two dead and eight injured, with activists demanding stricter oversight of security protocols.

A tragic incident unfolded in Abuja on Saturday when a stray bullet fired from a VIP convoy struck and killed an innocent pedestrian, sparking outrage over reckless security conduct.

The victim, identified as Timothy John, a resident of Dutse Baupma, was walking along the roadside when the convoy allegedly fired the stray bullet into the air to clear traffic caused by an earlier fatal accident.

The chaos began when a DAF trailer truck suffered brake failure and rammed into five tricycles, leaving eight injured and two dead.

As emergency responders worked at the scene, a VIP convoy arrived and personnel reportedly began firing indiscriminately, leading to panic among commuters. “A stray bullet hit Timothy in the chest,” said security analyst Zagazola Makama, who confirmed the incident on social media. “He was rushed to Kubwa General Hospital but pronounced dead on arrival.”

Authorities struggle to identify convoy

The shooting has drawn sharp criticism, with many questioning the unchecked power of VIP security details.

The FCT Police Public Relations Officer, SP Josephine Adeh, stated, “We are unable to identify them; we are still investigating.” Meanwhile, hospital sources confirmed John’s body is undergoing an autopsy while families of the crash victims mourn their losses.

Eyewitnesses described scenes of terror as gunfire erupted. “People were running in all directions—no one knew if they were being attacked,” said a roadside trader who asked for anonymity. Civil society groups have called for stricter regulations on VIP escorts, citing similar past incidents.

According to Saharareporters, the original crash, which occurred around 6:50 PM, has been overshadowed by the shooting controversy.

The trailer driver, now in custody, faces charges of negligent homicide. However, public anger remains fixated on the unnamed VIP convoy, with protests planned if accountability is delayed.
