KEY POINTS

  • Lagos police forces captured eight robbery suspects and obtained firearms from their possession.
  • Local gun manufacturers produced the recovered weapons which law enforcement officers found along with robbed property and homemade handguns during arrests made in different locations throughout the state.
  • The current investigations aim to identify supplementary suspects alongside the already detained persons who will then face charges before courts.

The Lagos State Police Command operatives arrested eight suspected armed robbers while recovering weapons during their multi-operation resistance cycle.

Details of Police arrest and recoveries

SP Benjamin Hundeyin who serves as spokesperson for Lagos State Police made public the arrests while also reporting that police secured the firearms. The Nigerian Army sergeant delivered a 30-year-old suspect arrested with a cross bag at Iyana-Iba in Ojo. A locally made pistol accompanied five unexpended cartridges as well as scissors within the cross bag plus the suspected Colorado hard drugs wrapped into ten bundles.

Law enforcement agents arrested four suspects aged from 20 to 24 at their hiding spot in Ago-Okota, Lagos on March 24. The authorities recovered a single-barrel gun with four live cartridges from the suspicious parcel made locally in the area. The search also yielded a battle axe.

Ongoing efforts and additional arrests

Police arrest a 27-year-old suspect on March 31 for committing phone robberies and N430,000 thefts against three commuters at the Ajah Under Bridge. Police recovered from his possession a Beretta pistol that had been produced within the country. The investigations remain active to arrest every party who participated in the criminal act.

On March 30 police officers detained two offenders who were 24 and 27 years old at the Oshodi/Bamgbose location of Lagos Island while police officials discovered a handmade pistol and two stolen cell phones at the scene. The ongoing investigations aim to bring in more suspects associated with the criminal activities.

Arms and ammunition seizures

Hundeyin disclosed that police found handguns along with ammunition inside a Victoria Island apartment worthy of note. During a normal inspection of a vacant building located at Adetokunbo Ademola Street in Victoria Island a police officer found two rifles together with 38 rounds of live ammunition on March 26. The obtained firearms currently remain in storage at the State Armoury.

Each of the detained suspects will receive court charges when investigators finish their work.
