In a brazen overnight attack, unidentified gunmen stormed an off-campus hostel near the Federal University Birnin Kebbi (FUBK), abducting a final-year student and killing a local resident.

The incident, which occurred in the early hours of Tuesday, has heightened security concerns in Kebbi State, where kidnappings and violent crimes have been on the rise.

The assailants, reportedly five in number, targeted Istijaba Villa, a student hostel in Unguwar Jeji, around 3:00am.

Witnesses said the gunmen approached students who were sleeping outside due to the intense heat and demanded money. “When we told them we had no money, they started beating us,” one student recounted.

Amid the chaos, Malam Siddi Hussaini, a resident tending to his cattle nearby, was fatally shot after attempting to intervene. “He heard the noise and rushed to help, but the gunmen opened fire on him,” a neighbor said.

Kebbi university and security agencies mobilize response

Augustine Madubiya, a 400-level Economics student, was forcibly taken by the attackers, while Collaneous Steven, a 200-level Business Administration student, narrowly escaped.

The abduction has sparked outrage among students and residents, with many calling for improved security measures around academic institutions.

In response, FUBK’s Vice Chancellor, Professor Muhammad Zaiyan Umar, visited the scene alongside security officials, including the Divisional Police Officer of Kalgo and DSS representatives.

We are working closely with security agencies to ensure the safe return of our student and prevent future attacks,” he assured.

Channelstv reported that the university has notified Kebbi State Governor, Dr. Nasir Idris, through the Secretary to the State Government and the Director of Security Services.
