Aare Ona Kakanfo of Yoruba land, Gani Adams, has called for an urgent overhaul of Nigeria’s security architecture.
In a keynote address at the 2025 Eledumare Festival in Lagos, Adams emphasized the growing insecurity and violence plaguing Nigeria.
He specifically pointed to the brutal killings, kidnappings, and the humanitarian crises unfolding in Ondo, Plateau, and Benue states.
According to Adams, these acts contradict the values of peace and unity that should hold the nation together.
He expressed his frustration with the government’s inability to address these issues, which have significantly impacted food security in Nigeria’s major agricultural states.
These issues have also deterred foreign investment and created instability. Adams stated that it was essential for Nigeria’s leadership to tackle these challenges head-on to secure the future of the country.
The call for restructuring and local police
Adams also stressed the need for restructuring Nigeria’s political system to ensure the creation of state and local government police forces.
He suggested that the federal government’s political interests should not hinder the national interest, as local police would be better positioned to address security concerns in the regions.
By decentralizing power and allowing local authorities to play a more significant role, Nigeria can better respond to the growing security threats.
Eledumare Festival promotes culture and unity
During the festival’s grand finale, Adams highlighted its importance in promoting Yoruba culture and traditions.
The 21-day celebration, which included performances, sports, and humanitarian outreach, was not only a time for spiritual reflection but also a vehicle for cultural exchange and unity.
Adams also noted the role of cultural festivals in maintaining peace, particularly in the southwestern region, where over 20 festivals help preserve harmony and cultural heritage.
