The Olu of Warri Ogiame Atuwatse III reached out to titled Sir Rowland Owie after the death of Owie’s spouse Lady Helen Owie.
Members from the royal Itsekiri delegation visited Owie’s residence in Benin to convey the monarch’s condolences and pay tribute to Lady Helen and her remarkable accomplishments.
Itsekiri chiefs pay tribute
Chief Yahya Pessu (Ojomo of Warri Kingdom), Chief Brown Mene (Ogwa-Olusan of Warri Kingdom), and Chief Lawrence Wilbert (Agura Tete of Warri Kingdom) led a delegation to accompany the royal message. The delegation members provided their condolences while remembering all the positive impacts Helen made during her lifetime.

Rowland Owie highlighted his wife’s contributions to Nigeria’s 1979 political developments
During his emotional response Owie spoke about his wife’s role as a unifier who provided unwavering support in every aspect of their shared life.
The 1979 Nigerian political history took a significant turn because of her backing that helped the Unity Party of Nigeria (UPN) gain power in the governorship election.
During a critical meeting between Lady Helen Aituwa Owie and Pa Alfred Rewane following Air Iyare’s primary election defeat, the presence and support of Lady Helen helped ensure Ambrose Alli gained Rewane’s backing.
She joined me on the road to Rewane right after the primary elections concluded. Our guide delivered us to M and K Shop located in Benin City. The Alli campaign received 21 buses from us when we donated them. He outlined his memory that she joined him during that particular trip.
Owie explained that she supported me through every event of life including political work and military service.
