Borno State Governor Babagana Zulum has issued a grave warning that Boko Haram may seize Marte Local Government Area if immediate federal support is not deployed.

According to the governor, only one town remains under government control in the area, while over 300 other communities have fallen to the insurgents.

Zulum, who made the disclosure during a weekend visit to Marte, called on the Federal Government and the Nigerian Army to urgently act to protect the lone surviving town.

“If we cannot maintain this one, then we will lose the whole local government to the insurgents,” he said.

He stressed the strategic importance of Marte and the need to defend it to avoid a complete collapse.

The town, which had been resettled four years ago, was recently attacked again, forcing mass displacement.

Thousands flee as insurgents overrun communities

The recent attack led to the displacement of about 20,000 residents, most of whom fled to Dikwa.

Zulum warned that the situation presents a security and humanitarian crisis, especially as displaced youths may become vulnerable to recruitment by insurgents.

The governor highlighted the urgency of providing protection and stability to prevent further spread of extremist influence in the region.

“We must not allow this situation to deteriorate further,” Zulum said. “Let’s hold our ground with the help of the army and volunteers to secure what is left of Marte.”

Governor vows to support military efforts in Borno

Despite the threats, the governor confirmed that some displaced residents have begun returning to Marte with assistance from security forces and local volunteers. Zulum spent the night in the area as a show of solidarity and resilience.

“Alhamdulillah, we returned to Marte yesterday and spent the night,” he said. “The community is now resettled for the second time, and we must do all we can to keep it this way.”

Zulum reiterated his commitment to supporting security agencies in restoring peace and stability in Borno State.

“On my part, I will do everything within my power to support our gallant military in their efforts,” he stated.
