KEY POINTS

  • The average price of petrol in April 2025 in Imo State was the highest at N1,588.50 per litre.
  • Fuel costs shrank a little from last month and rose by more than 76 percent when compared to prices seen in April.
  • In the zonal breakdown, South East had the highest average level and South West the lowest.

According to NBS, Imo, Jigawa and Sokoto States had the highest prices for Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) on average in April 2025.

The most recent PMS Price Watch result found that Imo residents bought fuel for N1,588.50, Jigawa residents paid N1,567.84 per litre and Sokoto residents paid N1,550.00.

A look at regional and monthly trends

Unlike in April where there were highest petrol prices , Jigawa, Kaduna and Cross River led the table for March with N1,700, N1,650.00 and N1,563.86. In addition, the districts where the month’s cheapest prices were recorded were Yobe N970.00, Kwara N1,014.85 and Osun N1,042.49.

Looking at the average zonal rate, the South East stood out with a zonal average of N1,341.71, but the South West had the least at N1,138.64.

A slight fall last month from the highest petrol prices

Even though prices of petroleum products are high locally, the cost fell slightly by 0.52 per cent, from N1,245.80 in March to N1,239.33 in April 2025. Yet, this is still 76.73 percent above the total for April 2024 which was N701.24.

Prices for petrol changing by state point to different challenges with access to fuel and logistics for transporting it across the country. According to analysts, where people live near fuel depots and experience challenges with delivery may explain some regional differences in prices.

The NBS data mentions that energy prices are still driving up inflation, hurting budgets for most families. Many stakeholders are asking for new regulations to maintain fair and stable fuel prices and ensure equal fuel supply in every region.
