Bola Tinubu spent his second year in office acknowledging important progress his administration has made.

The rise in Nigeria’s external reserves from $4 billion in 2023 to over $23 billion in 2024, according to him, demonstrates that the economy is improving. He suggested that dropping fuel subsidies and devaluing the naira would prevent a fiscal crisis and put the economy back on track.

During Tinubu mid-term review, he also mentioned the significant drop in the budget gap, it went from 5.4 percent of GDP in 2023 to 3.0 percent in 2024 as well as the rise in income collections. To reduce taxes for small businesses and raise revenue, the administration has passed major reforms that boosted the tax-to-GDP ratio to 13.5 percent.

Strengthened security

He said the increase in sharing among security forces, the return of affected farmers and safer highways reflect a stronger national security. The president recognized what the military had done to bring stability to unstable areas and save kidnapped people, promising Nigerians he would remain vigilant.

Hardware and software support as well as social programs bring value

About 1,000 Primary Health Centres have received help from the government with a further 5,500 being improved, the President explained. Three cancer centres have already opened and an additional 20 million people are now insured. He mentioned projects underway in roads, energy, agriculture and education, as well as student loan programs and schemes for empowering young people.

People pointed out strong opposition to Tinubu mid-term review

Still, the opponents do not accept these arguments. PDP claimed that Tinubu’s leadership during the first two years has made things more difficult for the country in terms of economics and security. The opposition LP said that it could have controlled inflation and the weakness of the naira better than the APC. CUPP said that Tinubu had led the country into a situation worse than what the country had known since becoming independent.

APC defends Tinubu mid-term review

In reply, the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) stated that Tinubu had taken deliberate steps to address problems and improve the nation’s chances for sustainable growth. The party promised Nigerians that the next two years of their government will see greater visible results.
