  • WAEC says result checker shutdown caused by technical glitch.
  • Students unable to view results as tension builds.
  • WAEC English failure controversy remains unresolved.

The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) is pleading for calm after its result checker portal unexpectedly went offline Wednesday evening, compounding frustration among candidates eager to view their 2025 WASSCE results.

In a brief post on its official X (formerly Twitter) handle, the council blamed “technical issues” for the disruption and said efforts were underway to restore access within 24 hours.

WAEC English failure controversy intensifies

The timing of the shutdown couldn’t be worse. Just days earlier, WAEC had confirmed the release of this year’s WASSCE results which were already under heavy scrutiny due to widespread failures in English Language.

Only 38.32 percent of the nearly two million candidates obtained credits in five core subjects including English and Mathematics, sparking national backlash. Many students claim to have aced science subjects but mysteriously failed English, despite enduring grueling exam conditions on May 28 when the paper was delayed until late at night at some centers.

WAEC urges calm, warns against scams

According to a recent report by the Nigerian Inquirer where WAEC received backlash as regards mass failure, the council has now appealed for patience, urging candidates and parents not to fall for third-party scams promising access to results through unofficial channels. It emphasized that updates will be posted only on its verified social media platforms.

While the technical glitch appears temporary, the bigger storm still looms public trust. With mass failures, especially in English, still unexplained, WAEC’s credibility may take more than 24 hours to repair.
