United Nigeria Airlines has reached a deal with Southwest Airlines, which is based in the United States, to buy six Boeing 737-800 planes. This is a big step up for the Nigerian airline’s fleet.

The deal, concluded at Southwest’s Dallas headquarters, positions the Obiora Okonkwo-owned airline to scale up its domestic, regional, and international operations. The new jets are expected to boost capacity, cut costs, and align with Nigeria’s aviation development push.

United Nigeria Airlines expands Boeing fleet

Chairman Obiora Okonkwo said the acquisition strengthens the airline’s growth strategy four years into operations. “Upgrading to the Boeing 737-800 allows us to expand profitably while offering more travel options to Nigerians and other African passengers,” he said.

Partnership with Southwest Airlines extends to training

The agreement goes beyond the supply of planes, creating a long-term technical partnership with Southwest Airlines. It includes maintenance support, crew training, and safety upgrades aimed at improving passenger confidence.

United Nigeria Airlines plans further Boeing purchases

According to Billionaires Africa, the carrier is weighing the acquisition of four more Boeing 737-800 Next Generation jets between 2026 and 2027. Okonkwo said the expansion will help launch direct flights, improve cargo services, and keep fares competitive.
