Nigerians in Europe to Enjoy Faster Passport Processing With New Facilities

Published on

Nigerians living in Europe will soon benefit from improved passport services, as the federal government has inaugurated additional enhanced e-passport facilities at selected Nigerian embassies. The new facilities are expected to reduce processing delays and enhance the security and quality of the travel documents.

The enhanced e-passport facilities were launched at the Nigerian Embassy in Rome by the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, who represented President Bola Tinubu. The minister said the initiative was part of the government’s commitment to citizens’ diplomacy and the welfare of the diaspora community.

The minister announced the phased rollout of the enhanced e-passport in Europe, starting with Italy, Spain, Greece, Austria and Switzerland. The second phase will be implemented by the end of the week. He said the e-passport complies with all standards set by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), making Nigeria the first country in Africa and the fifth in the world to adopt the technology.

The e-passport is an advanced travel document that offers three categories: 32-page five-year validity, 64-page five-year validity and 64-page ten-year validity (for adults only). It also features a microchip that stores the biometric data and personal information of the holder, making it more secure and tamper-proof.

The minister urged applicants to follow the application guidelines, which include using the online platform at passport.immigration.gov.ng and synchronizing their passport data with their National Identification Number (NIN). He said the NIN is mandatory for all Nigerians and legal residents, as it helps to verify and authenticate their identity.

The minister also assured Nigerians in the diaspora that the government is working to address their challenges, such as access to consular services, remittance facilitation, investment opportunities and protection of their rights. He said the government appreciates their contributions to the country’s development and will continue to engage with them through various platforms and initiatives.

The enhanced e-passport facilities are part of the government’s efforts to reform the immigration system and improve service delivery. The government has also introduced the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) e-solutions, which include e-visa, e-migrant registration, e-border management and e-arrival and departure systems.

The e-solutions aim to facilitate the movement of people and goods across borders, enhancing national security and promoting economic growth. The government has also pledged to upgrade the infrastructure and equipment of the NIS, as well as train and motivate its personnel.

Many Nigerians have welcomed the inauguration of the enhanced e-passport facilities in Europe in the diaspora, who have expressed their satisfaction and optimism. They said the new facilities will make it easier and faster for them to renew or obtain their passports, as well as boost their confidence and pride as Nigerian citizens.
