KEY POINTS

  • Abia Green Shuttle Service will put 100 electric buses on the road.
  • The concept fits with the world’s aims for clean transportation.
  • It will lower pollution across the state and create jobs.

Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, will soon unveil the Abia Green Shuttle Service, an electric vehicle (EV) public transport system designed to transform the state’s transport network and advance clean mobility.

The initiative, according to a statement by the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Ukoha Njoku Ukoha, will position Abia as a pioneer of clean mobility and eco-friendly innovation in Nigeria.

Abia Green Shuttle Service ushers in clean mobility

Ukoha said the Abia Green Shuttle Service reflects Otti’s broader vision for a modern and sustainable public transport network aligned with global environmental standards.

“The State under Governor Otti has embraced the future over and above PMS, Diesel and CNG,” he said. “This initiative demonstrates a firm commitment to cleaner energy and climate responsibility.”

He explained that the state government aims to build a system that not only reduces carbon emissions but also improves efficiency and passenger comfort across urban centres.

Abia Green Shuttle Service to deploy 100 electric buses

According to the statement, the project will begin with 100 electric buses serving Aba, Umuahia, and Ohafia. The first batch of 20 buses, alongside 10 charging stations with accessibility features, will be operational before the end of the year.

A second batch of 20 buses and another 10 charging infrastructures is expected by early next year. New solar-powered bus stops are also nearing completion in Aba and Umuahia to enhance reliability and reduce dependence on grid electricity.

“The sustainable transport system will utilise solar energy and battery storage to power operations,” Ukoha said. “It will also create jobs, improve road safety, and stimulate economic activity.”

He described the project as a major milestone for Abia’s growth plan, saying, “Governor Otti’s green shuttle initiative demonstrates a commitment to modernising transport, advancing sustainability, and improving citizens’ quality of life.”
