The Nigerian Army has begun an investigation into the death of Lance Corporal Femi Akenleye, who allegedly killed his wife before taking his own life at Wawa Cantonment in Niger State.
Soldier kills wife over alleged infidelity
Sources in the barracks said Akenleye was on duty when the incident occurred. He reportedly asked for permission to attend to a personal issue but left with his rifle, which violates standard procedure.
When he got home, he allegedly confronted his wife over suspected infidelity. The argument escalated, and he opened fire on her before turning the gun on himself.
The tragic event happened on October 11, 2025, and left the entire Wawa Cantonment community in shock. Many soldiers and residents struggled to understand how the situation turned so deadly.
Army confirms incident, begins investigation
In a statement, Captain Stephen Nwankwo, Acting Assistant Director of Army Public Relations for the 22 Armoured Brigade, Ilorin, confirmed the deaths.
He said an investigation had already started to uncover what led to the tragedy.
“The 22 Armoured Brigade is aware of the incident involving Lance Corporal Akenleye Femi, who is suspected to have killed his wife and committed suicide,” Nwankwo said.
“Preliminary findings show that he was on duty in the Cantonment and had sought permission to attend to personal needs.
Shortly after, both were found dead in their apartment at Block 15, Room 24, Corporals and Below Quarters.”
He explained that the corpses had been taken for preservation and that the military would carry out a full inquiry.
Army promises transparency and preventive measures
Brigadier General Ezra Barkins, Commander of the 22 Armoured Brigade, expressed deep sadness over the deaths.
He offered condolences to the families, friends, and colleagues of the deceased couple.
Barkins assured Nigerians that the investigation would be transparent and that its findings would be made public.
He added that the army would take preventive measures to reduce similar cases in the future.
“The Nigerian Army commiserates with the family, friends, and colleagues of the deceased and prays for the peaceful repose of their souls,” he said.
“We also urge the public to remain patient as the investigation continues. The outcome will be shared once all facts are verified.”
The army emphasized its commitment to accountability, transparency, and the welfare of its personnel.
