KEY POINTS

  • Enugu political realignment strengthens APC’s foothold in the South-East.
  • Governor Mbah’s tech-driven policies inspire group’s defection.
  • PDP loses a major bloc as alliances shift.

On Wednesday, political realignments in Enugu got even stronger when the Enugu South Advocates, one of the state’s biggest political pressure organizations, said they were leaving the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

They joined the All Progressives Congress (APC) with Governor Peter Ndubuisi Mbah. The move marks a major shift for a state long considered a PDP stronghold and could reshape alliances ahead of future contests in the South-East.

Enugu political realignment gains momentum under Governor Mbah

Speaking to journalists after the defection, the group’s leader, Hon. Uche Kelvin Edeh, said the decision followed “deep reflection” on the state’s political direction and the need to align with the federal government to enhance development prospects.

“With formidable infrastructure and people-oriented policies, there is no doubt Enugu State is on the path of progress,” Edeh said.

He said the group defected because of “visible changes” in governance and a belief that working with the federal centre would improve Enugu’s access to national opportunities.

“Governor Mbah has proven himself to be a leader worthy of commendation, with his administration’s focus on infrastructure development and people-centric policies yielding positive results,” he also added.

Enugu political realignment reshapes South-East power dynamics

Edeh also noted that the administration’s emphasis on technology and youth empowerment aligns with modern economic realities.

“Governor Mbah’s commitment to empowering young people with tech skills reflects the modern reality where technology drives the economy,” he stated.

The defection further underscores a broader willingness among influential figures and community groups to reposition ahead of the next electoral cycle. In conclusion, analysts say the Enugu political realignment could redefine the region’s power balance as the APC deepens its roots in the South-East.
