The Ondo State government has moved to allay public fears after a leaked Department of State Services (DSS) memo.

This warned of possible terrorist attacks in some parts of the state by the Islamic State of West Africa Province (ISWAP).

In a statement released in Akure, Commissioner for Information and Orientation Idowu Ajanaku confirmed the government’s awareness of the memo addressed to the 32 Artillery Brigade of the Nigerian Army. He said the leaked report was part of routine intelligence exchanges among security agencies aimed at preventing threats.

Furthermore, Ajanaku clarified that such intelligence memos form a normal aspect of security coordination and are used to enhance vigilance. “These reports are being acted upon by the government and relevant security agencies,” he said. “Necessary precautions are being taken to ensure the safety of lives and property.”

The DSS report, signed by Director of Security Hi Kana, had listed Eriti Akoko and Oyin Akoko in Akoko North-West. As well as Owo town in Owo Local Government Area, as potential targets. It warned that ISWAP members were conducting surveillance on soft targets and urged increased alertness in the affected communities.

Ajanaku assured that Governor Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa remains in close contact with security chiefs to strengthen patrols, particularly in border communities. He urged residents to remain calm and report suspicious activity rather than resorting to self-help.

“The government is taking every step to keep Ondo among the safest states in Nigeria,” he also said, appealing for cooperation with law enforcement agencies to prevent any potential threats.
