The Federal Government has approved a $1 billion modernisation project for Lagos ports, kick-starting a broader plan to upgrade seaport infrastructure across the country.

Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola, announced the initiative at the 2025 Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport (CILT) Nigeria Conference in Lagos. The move, he said, is central to transforming Nigeria’s maritime sector into a globally competitive hub.

Lagos port modernisation to boost global competitiveness

Represented by the Managing Director of the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA), Abubakar Dantsoho, Oyetola said the Lagos port modernisation aims to enhance cargo handling, expand capacity, and improve logistics efficiency.

The government is also working with industry stakeholders to achieve a paperless, technology-driven port environment that reduces vessel turnaround times and limits corruption.

Similar modernisation projects outside Lagos are also in progress to ensure balanced growth across Nigeria’s maritime gateways.

Lagos port modernisation drives safer and cleaner operations

Oyetola noted that the upgrades reflect the government’s commitment to building sustainable logistics systems while safeguarding Nigeria’s waters.

He further cited the Deep Blue Project’s success, which has kept piracy at zero levels for three consecutive years.

He went on to say that the changes will lower the cost of doing business even more, boost investor confidence, and make Nigeria’s ports more competitive in global trade.
