Key Points

  • Bandits killed the vice principal during an early morning raid.
  • Attackers abducted 25 schoolgirls from the school premises.
  • Widow’s daughter escaped by outsmarting the armed attackers.

Armed bandits stormed Government Girls Comprehensive Senior Secondary School in Maga, Kebbi State, early Monday, killing the vice principal and abducting 25 schoolgirls.

The widow of the slain vice principal, Mrs. Amina Hassan, recounted how her daughter narrowly escaped the raid.

The attackers struck the community in the early hours, shooting sporadically before entering the school and nearby residences.

Vice Principal Hassan was killed during the assault, while dozens of female students were taken.

Terrifying Moments at Home

Mrs. Hassan said the intruders broke into their home around 3:30 a.m. while the family slept.

She recalled, “We were asleep around 3:30 a.m. when I heard movements behind our window.

I tried to wake my husband to tell him that the animals were destroying our things outside. Before I knew it, there was a bang on our door, and it was forcibly opened.”

She soon realized the sounds were not from animals but armed men. “We started struggling with them.

Then one of them pulled out his gun and shot my husband. They dragged me outside by my hand,” she said.

Daughter’s Quick Thinking

The bandits demanded that she and her children follow them, but she refused. “I told them to leave me. I would not go with them since they had killed the father of my children,” she said.

Her daughter then appeared, drawing the attackers’ attention. “They told her to follow them to the hostel and lie down so they could shoot her too. She refused. She asked, ‘I should lay down so you can shoot me?’ They said yes.”

In a quick act of thinking, the girl asked to be allowed to relieve herself first. When the attackers opened the door, they saw other girls, and their attention shifted. She ran into the bush and returned safely by morning.

Community on Edge

Residents of Maga remain tense as security agencies continue efforts to locate the kidnapped students. Families are calling for urgent intervention to prevent further attacks in the area.

The widow’s account highlights both the terror of the raid and the courage of those who survived. Authorities have promised to intensify rescue operations and bring the perpetrators to justice.
