Police Seal PDP National Headquarters Amid Leadership Rift

KEY POINTS

  • PDP leadership crisis deepens in Abuja.
  • Security forces restrict access to headquarters.
  • Party staff denied entry by police.

Armed police operatives sealed the National Headquarters of the Peoples Democratic Party in Abuja on Wednesday, intensifying the already fragile political atmosphere surrounding the opposition party.

Officers arrived at Wadata Plaza in Garki shortly before dawn, positioning multiple patrol vans around the premises and blocking all entry points.

By morning, the complex was completely inaccessible. Staff members, journalists, and supporters attempting to resume routine activities were met by officers who insisted they were acting on “orders from above.” Several witnesses said police maintained a firm perimeter, directing everyone to leave the area and offering no additional explanation about the operation.

The move comes at a time when the PDP is battling one of its most destabilizing internal conflicts in recent years. Rival factions, each claiming legitimacy, have escalated their contest for control of the National Working Committee. This dispute has deepened mistrust within the party and created uncertainty over decision-making at the national level.

PDP leadership crisis further deepens in Abuja as factions clash

Sources within the party said rival blocs may have used the police action to assert control of the headquarters ahead of key administrative decisions

Some members also said conflicting court orders and competing interpretations of recent rulings have created confusion over who holds the legal authority to direct the party’s affairs.

For much of the day, the usually busy plaza remained quiet, with surrounding roads partially obstructed by security vehicles. Party workers expressed frustration, saying they received no prior notice and were unsure when operations would resume. Journalists who gathered outside the building could not enter or speak with the security guards on duty.

The PDP hasn’t officially responded yet, and the police haven’t put out an official statement about the operation either. The development underscores the mounting pressure within the party as it navigates internal fractures while attempting to position itself for future national political engagements.
