Nigeria says it has met all of its obligations as the host of the new Africa Energy Bank, which brings the project one step closer to its official launch. Heineken Lokpobiri, the Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Oil), said that the country has fulfilled all of its obligations related to the bank’s opening, such as delivering and furnishing its headquarters in Abuja.

On Thursday, Lokpobiri inspected the newly finished building and said it was “fully ready” for business. The minister said that the building, which is in a great part of the capital, was furnished to international standards and ready to be turned over to the bank’s governing bodies.

Nigeria meets all of its AEB host-country duties

Lokpobiri says that Nigeria’s delivery of the headquarters and its other commitments were key to getting the project and showing that the country was ready to host the institution. He said that the Federal Government is now waiting for the African Petroleum Producers’ Organisation (APPO) and the African Export-Import Bank (Afreximbank) to finish the last steps in the process. These two groups are working together to promote the Africa Energy Bank.

“I came to check out the Africa Energy Bank’s headquarters furniture, and I’m happy to say that Nigeria has met all of its responsibilities as the host country,” Lokpobiri said. “The headquarters is ready and tastefully decorated, and we are ready for the bank to open.”

APPO and Afreximbank are going to finish the launch process

Lokpobiri also said that Nigeria is getting ready to host APPO ministers to officially show off the finished facility and prove that the country has kept all of its promises made during the selection process. He said that the visit would let regional leaders see the headquarters in person before the handover.

“We’re trying to get the APPO ministers to come to Nigeria so we can show them that we kept our word,” he said. “We’ll give it to them once they get here.”

The minister said that Nigeria has given all the technical support, infrastructure, and conditions that a host country should provide. This means that operations can start quickly once APPO and Afreximbank finish their last steps.

Africa Energy Bank wants to grow by $120 billion in five years

Afreximbank and APPO are both behind the Africa Energy Bank, which will start with $5 billion in assets. Within five years, the institution is expected to grow rapidly to $120 billion, making it one of the most important energy-finance platforms on the continent.

The bank should help Africa get around its ongoing problems with getting money for energy projects, especially since global lenders are pulling out of fossil fuel investments. It will also help with gas development, transition projects, and big infrastructure projects in all member countries.

Lokpobiri said that the bank’s opening is a big step towards energy security on the continent and makes Nigeria’s role at the centre of Africa’s energy future stronger.
