KEY POINTS

  • Lagos Assembly plans to spend N55.4bn in 2026 on lawmakers’ quarters and beautification projects.
  • Only N16bn is allocated to community-based infrastructure interventions.
  • Budget reviews show a pattern of heavy spending on lawmakers’ welfare, vehicles, generators, and renovations despite wider public infrastructure challenges.

The Lagos State House of Assembly has earmarked a total of N55.4 billion in the 2026 budget for the construction of permanent residential quarters for lawmakers and the beautification of the Assembly complex.

A review of the approved budget by SaharaReporters shows that N35.4 billion will be spent on building permanent legislative quarters for members of the Assembly.

The allocation covers architectural designs, structural engineering, soil tests, piling works, documentation processing, and consultancy services related to the project.

N20bn for Fencing, Drainage and Landscaping

In addition to the housing project, the lawmakers allocated N20 billion for related infrastructure and aesthetic upgrades.

This includes the construction of new perimeter fencing and drainage channels at the legislative quarters, the covering of gutters with slabs, landscaping, and extensive beautification of both the Assembly complex and the residential quarters.

Altogether, these projects bring the total spending on lawmakers’ accommodation and Assembly beautification to N55.4 billion.

In contrast, only N16 billion was budgeted for MDA-executed community-based capital infrastructural interventions, raising concerns about spending priorities amid pressing public infrastructure needs across the state.

The 2026 allocations follow revelations from Lagos State budget performance documents for the 2025 fiscal year, which showed that billions of naira were spent on lawmakers’ welfare and assets.

According to the documents, N4.5 billion was expended on the purchase of 40 units of 50KVA backup generators for lawmakers, while an additional N3.6 billion went into the acquisition of properties in both Lagos and Abuja.
