KEY POINTS

  • Over 98 percent rate Tax ID portal experience as seamless.
  • Tax ID portal centralizes Nigeria’s taxpayer database.
  • Platform supports ongoing national tax reforms.

Nigeria’s Joint Revenue Board said more than 98 percent of taxpayers who retrieved their Tax Identification Numbers through a newly launched national portal described the process as seamless, citing findings from a Help Desk survey.

The Tax ID portal, introduced on Jan. 1, 2026, is jointly managed by the Joint Revenue Board and the Nigeria Revenue Service and serves as a centralized taxpayer database. The platform allows individuals to generate a 13-digit Tax ID using their National Identity Number, while businesses can retrieve theirs using Corporate Affairs Commission registration details.

The initiative forms part of broader fiscal reforms under President Bola Tinubu’s administration aimed at harmonizing fragmented taxpayer records across federal and state systems.

Tax ID Portal Survey Results

According to a statement released Monday, the Help Desk team collected feedback through questionnaires shared on Facebook, X, Instagram and WhatsApp, as well as telephone interviews with users who attempted to retrieve their Tax IDs.

Respondents were asked about processing speed, ease of navigation, convenience and overall experience.

“At the end of the poll, we collated all the responses and analysed them. More than 98 per cent of the respondents said they had a seamless experience retrieving their Tax ID,” said Effiong Abasifreke, head of the JRB Help Desk team.

After entering the necessary identifying information, users said retrieval times were only a few seconds. Corporate respondents also mentioned that the site loads quickly and is easy to navigate.

Tax ID Portal Centralizes Records

Furthermore, authorities designed the Tax ID portal to consolidate taxpayer data into a single national database, improve coordination between tax authorities, and strengthen data security safeguards in line with Nigerian Data Protection Commission regulations.

JRB Executive Secretary Olusegun Adesokan therefore urged taxpayers who have not retrieved their Tax IDs to use the self-service platform. He also dismissed concerns that financial institutions would use the framework to make arbitrary deductions from bank accounts.

The Board also said implementation of the reforms is underway at federal and subnational levels, with continued public engagement central to improving compliance and transparency in revenue administration.
