KEY POINTS

  • Atiku says low turnout in FCT council elections signals intimidation and weakening opposition.
  • He accuses the Tinubu administration of shrinking democratic space and eroding public trust.
  • APC won five of six seats, PDP won one, while ADC secured none.

Former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar says the low turnout in the Federal Capital Territory area council elections reflects a political climate shaped by intimidation, intolerance, and the suppression of opposition forces.

Atiku accused the administration of Bola Tinubu of narrowing Nigeria’s democratic space, warning that public trust in elections is eroding and could permanently damage participatory governance if not addressed.

The All Progressives Congress won five of six chairmanship seats, while the Peoples Democratic Party secured victory in Gwagwalada.

The African Democratic Congress, which Atiku is aligned with, failed to win any chairmanship position. He urged opposition parties to unite to strengthen Nigeria’s democracy.
