Former national chairman of the All Progressives Congress and senior figure in the African Democratic Congress, John Odigie-Oyegun, says political leaders from Nigeria’s South South region have agreed to support former transport minister Rotimi Amaechi if he contests the presidency in 2027.
Odigie-Oyegun made this known after Amaechi met with regional leaders and formally told them he plans to run. According to him, the meeting ended with a shared decision to stand behind Amaechi’s ambition.
Odigie-Oyegun praised Amaechi for consulting leaders from his home region before taking any major political steps. He said the move showed respect and maturity, noting that it is always better for aspirants to first inform their own people rather than quietly building political structures on their own.
He described Amaechi’s approach as responsible and said it helped leaders feel confident in supporting him.
Plan for Regular Strategy Meetings
The elder statesman also revealed that the group intends to meet often as the next election cycle draws closer. According to him, these meetings will help political stakeholders in the region share ideas, learn from one another, and build a united front that could serve as a model for other parts of the country.
Odigie-Oyegun stressed that as political activities begin to gather speed, leaders and authorities must make peace a priority. He urged all sides to avoid violence and create a stable atmosphere so that the coming elections can be conducted smoothly.
He added that members of the ADC know time is short and say they are already focused on preparations.
The development is notable because prominent opposition figures such as Peter Obi and Atiku Abubakar were not part of the endorsement announcement, a sign that political alignments ahead of 2027 may already be shifting.
