  • Members of the Islamic Movement of Nigeria protested in several states over the reported killing of Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei.
  • Demonstrators condemned the US and Israel, waving Iranian flags and expressing solidarity with Iran.
  • The police have heightened security nationwide to prevent any unrest linked to the Middle East crisis.

Members of the Islamic Movement of Nigeria, IMN, widely known as Shi’ites, have taken to the streets in several Nigerian states to protest the reported killing of Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei.

The demonstrations by the IMN followed recent joint airstrikes by the United States and Israel on Iranian targets, which reportedly led to Khamenei’s death alongside members of his family.

The protests by the IMN were held in Lagos, Kano, Niger, Sokoto, Gombe, Kaduna, Bauchi, and Yobe states. In many of the cities, demonstrators marched in organised processions, waving Iranian flags and carrying large portraits of Khamenei.

Placards with strong messages by the IMN condemning the United States and Israel were displayed, while protesters also expressed solidarity with the people of Iran. In some areas, traffic was slowed as security operatives monitored the gatherings to ensure they did not spiral out of control.

The mood at the protests was emotional, with many participants describing the development as an attack not just on Iran but on the wider Muslim community.

Rising Tension in the Middle East

The protests in Nigeria come against the backdrop of rising tensions in the Middle East. The United States and Israel said their coordinated strikes were aimed at weakening Iran’s military strength and preventing further escalation in the region.

However, the attacks have sparked criticism from Iran’s allies and supporters across parts of Africa and the Middle East, who see the strikes as an act of aggression.

The situation has continued to generate global reactions, with fears that the conflict could widen if diplomatic efforts fail.

The IMN has historically shown strong support for Iran and its leadership. Over the years, the group has organised rallies and processions in response to major political or military developments involving Tehran.

In the past, some of these demonstrations have led to confrontations with security agencies, especially when protests were declared unauthorised or when tensions escalated.

Observers say the latest protests are consistent with the group’s pattern of reacting strongly to events that affect Iran’s leadership.
