KEY POINTS

  • DIG Frank Mba voluntarily retired after 34 years, joining other officers exiting following the IGP change.
  • The PSC invited seven AIGs for promotion interviews to the rank of Deputy Inspector-General.
  • Mba graduated as the best cadet academically at the Nigeria Police Academy, Kano.

Deputy Inspector-General of Police Frank Mba voluntarily retired from the Nigeria Police Force this week after 34 years of service, stepping down as part of a broader reshuffling of senior leadership that followed IGP Tunji Disu’s appointment as the new head of the force.

Mba joined the force in May 1992 as a cadet officer and immediately stood out, graduating as the best cadet academically at the Nigeria Police Academy in Kano. He built a career that ranged from street-level postings in Lagos to international assignments at the United Nations peacekeeping mission in Liberia between 2006 and 2007.

Beyond operational work, Mba pursued an unusually deep academic profile. He earned a law degree from the University of Lagos and joined the Nigerian Bar in 2002. He later completed a Master of Laws with distinction from the University of Dundee in Scotland and attended professional programs at the FBI National Academy in Quantico, Harvard University and the University of Oxford.

A Career That Touched Every Dimension of Policing

Over three decades, Mba served as Area Commander in Ajah and Festac in Lagos, Commissioner of Police in Ogun State, Commissioner of Police for the Border Patrol Force at Force Headquarters and AIG in charge of the FCID Annex in Panti, Lagos. Many Nigerians know him best as the Force Public Relations Officer, a role in which he became the most recognizable police spokesman of his generation.

In a farewell message, Mba therefore thanked President Bola Tinubu for the opportunity to serve and extended gratitude to Nigerians for their support across his career. “Policing is a difficult but noble profession, and whatever success we recorded was made possible by the understanding and support of Nigerians,” he said. “I leave the service with a heart full of gratitude and pride.”

Seven AIGs Now in Line for Promotion

With Mba’s exit and other senior departures tied to the transition from former IGP Kayode Egbetokun, the Police Service Commission has moved quickly to fill vacancies. Furthermore, the PSC invited seven Assistant Inspectors-General for promotion interviews to the rank of Deputy Inspector-General, with appearances scheduled at the commission’s office on Friday.

Finally, the seven officers are Margareth Ochalla, Kenechukwu Onwuemelie, Ishiaku Mohammed, Zacharia Fera Achinyan, Zango Ibrahim Baba, Mohammed Abdul Sulaiman and Umar Shehu Nadada.
